Maftown Heights

Following the overwhelming success of the documentary screening of Maftown Heights Untold Stories, the renowned Maftown Heights festival is thrilled to announce its return with a special “Reunion” edition this November. This highly anticipated event will take place in Johannesburg, bringing together fans and artists to celebrate the rich legacy of Motswako music and hip hop culture.

Maftown Heights Untold Stories, which premiered last month with the final episode airing this past Saturday, captivated audiences with its powerful portrayal of the history and impact of the Maftown Heights festival. The documentary highlighted the festival’s role in elevating Motswako artists and providing a platform for their voices to be heard. The film’s success has reignited excitement and anticipation for the festival’s return.

The “Reunion” edition promises to be a spectacular celebration, featuring an incredible line-up of Motswako legends and rising stars. Attendees can look forward to unforgettable performances, electrifying collaborations, and special tributes that honour the festival’s history and its contribution to South African music and culture. A special marker of this year’s festival will see Maglera Doe Boy play a large part in the festival curation.

“We are overjoyed by the response to Maftown Heights Untold Stories and are excited to bring back the Maftown Heights festival for a ‘Reunion’ edition. We aim to create an experience that not only celebrates our past but also looks forward to the future of Motswako and its continued influence on the music industry,” share festival founders Khuli Chana and Refiloe Ramogase.

“Maftown Heights remains the most iconic and game-changing cultural movement in the South African music industry. I just know the event will be a massive celebration!” Hloni Mohope, KFC Chief Marketing Officer, Central & Eastern Europe.

“This is one of the most beautiful pieces of history in our post ‘94 cultural movement – so proud of Khuli and Refiloe and the collective,” Sanza The Fanatik.

A build up to the festival will also include various interactive elements such as panel discussions and workshops that delve deeper into the culture and impact of Motswako. Fans will have the unique opportunity to engage with their favourite artists and gain insights into the creative processes behind their music, as was seen with the virtual panel discussion held last week on Maftown Heights’ X Space which saw over 1300 users tune in expressing the session as being both informative and unifying. Listeners got an insider’s perspective into the journeys of the likes of Khuli Chana, HashOne, and Maglera Doe Boy, and an understanding of the role the likes of Stoan Seate played in commercialising the genre of Motswako.

This announcement marks an exciting chapter in the legacy of Maftown Heights. As the country gets ready for the return of one of SA’s most iconic festivals, immerse yourself in the history and making of Maftown Heights. If you missed the Maftown Heights Untold Stories documentary finale this past Saturday, you can catch the repeat this Wednesday at 19:00 on Channel O, DStv channel 320 or watch the entire 4-part documentary series on demand on DStv catch up.

Make sure to follow Maftown Heights on social media to be the first to know when tickets for the Maftown Heights “Reunion” edition will go on sale. Early bird specials and VIP packages will be available, offering fans and friends of Maftown Heights the chance to secure their spots at this historic event.
