SARS eFiling helps taxpayers submit their tax return forms online quickly and easily. In order to use SARS eFiling, you will need your own tax reference number. If you do not have a tax number, you will be required to get a South African tax number.
How to register for SARS eFiling
You can sign-up to use the SARS eFiling service as a registered taxpayer. This service allows you to file for a return, request a tax clearance certificate and make payments to SARS. It also gives users to other benefits through its electronic platform.
Steps to register as an eFiler
- Visit the SARS eFiling website at www.sarsefiling.co.za
- Click on Register
- You will be shown the SARS eFiling Terms and Conditions
- Click “I accept” and press the continue button to proceed
- You can also download the MobiApp and click on Register or
- Visit your nearest SARS Branch to register
SARS will ask you to complete the eFiling registration form with your personal details. Once you have registered, you will be able to perform the below roles;
- Administer your own individual taxes
- Act as an employee for a company or as the registered representative
- You can also act as an agent on behalf of other people
Once your eFiling registration is complete, SARS will recognise you as an electronic filer.
What documents do I need to register for eFiling?
Many South Africans ask themselves this question; What do I need to register for SARS eFiling? You will need to have the following documents to register:
1. Proof of identity
You need to provide certified copies of your valid identity document such as the green barcoded book or the smart ID card. You can also use your passport, driving licence or a temporary identity document.
2. Proof of address
The South African Revenue Service (SARS) states that the proof of address such as residential or business address must clearly your name as the taxpayer and the physical address.
3. Proof of bank details
Your proof of banking details must not be older than 30 days. The letter from the bank must show your name, account number and type, branch code and the date the bank account was opened. For those using their original bank statements, you must make sure that they must no be older than three months old.
Upon registration, the South African Revenue Service will verify all the information you submitted on registration. The end result of this will be liaised via email or on your eFiling registration verification page. You will receive a One Time Pin (OTP) to your to your preferred channel of communication once your registration is successful.
Noted that registration can be successful, rejected or awaiting supporting documents. If your SARS eFiling was not successful, you cannot use the eFiling and must act based on the correspondence received. If SARS rejects your registration, the representative / taxpayer can visit their nearest SARS branch office to register for eFiling.
SARS takes within 48 hours to active new eFiling profiles. If your registration is not processed within the 48 hours period, visit sarsefiling.co.za and login and click Home and go to User and click Pending Registration to check any other required documents or details regarding the processing of your eFiling registration.
